Content: I have been a photographer for more than 40 years. I don't know that this is an important consideration but just now it seems so. I have made a living at times as a photographer but those times were doing something as a photographer which I did not love. My first love has always been Landscape and Nature photography. I have worked in 35 mm, medium format, large format both 4X5 and 8X10 and finally digital. I thought for a time I would end my career as a large format photographer. I was introduced to the concept of digital photography, we knew it was coming, by a gentleman I met carrying a very large backpack. Inside was a 4X5 camera, a couple of nice lenses, a digital back and some huge batteries. This was somewhere in the mid '90's. We began to experiment with the tools available which were few. We made prints which began to fade after a few days on the wall. I experimented with small point and shoot cameras of good quality but the wholesale conversion really began for me in 2003. That year I went to Yellowstone with my beautiful Linhof camera, excellent lenses and all that entails. I also took a Nikon D1X to play with. I shot 4X5 but when time permitted, I worked with the Nikon. The following year I went back to Yellowstone with my 4X5 but this time the test was different. I now owned a Canon 1D. My mission on that trip was to shoot digital. I made an agreement with myself that if I saw spectacular, I'd shoot it on 4X5, if not I would see what I could produce with my digital camera. I did not see spectacular. Over the course of the next year I got comfortable enough with digital that I decided to devote myself to it. I shot a Canon 1D MkII until a couple of years ago. Now I am 100% digital and currently shooting a Canon 5D MkII. Since I am primarily a landscape photographer, just now that is my camera of choice. When a wildlife shot presents itself I am still ready. I think of digital as a life change and I know it is the same for many, many photographers. I think back to setting up a shot on 4x5 at Reflection Lakes with Mt Rainier reflected on the water surface. The whole time I was setting up I was watching a cinnamon colored Black Bear just across the lake from me. I heard a female voice from the parking lot behind me say "Oh are you shooting the bear?" I just said no. There is much to come, most of my work is still available as 4X5 Chromes. There will be more galleries to add from digital files but my two trips to the Canadian Rockies were shot only on 4X5. I have work to do.
